What is a Button Gauge

A button gauge is a specialized measuring tool used to measure button sizes, which is very important in the garment industry.

A button gauge is a metal or plastic plate with circular holes of different sizes, each marked with corresponding button size numbers (usually in ligne or mm units). In button industry standards, 1 ligne = 0.635mm, with common sizes ranging from 10L to 60L.

Daily Usage Methods

Measuring Button Size:

Place the button on the button gauge
Find the hole that allows the button to pass through snugly
Record the size number marked on that hole

Measuring Thickness:

Can be used to measure thickness of fabrics, leather and other materials
Insert materials into appropriate holes to determine thickness range

Applications in Garment Industry

Design Stage:

Select appropriate button sizes according to garment style
Ensure proper proportion between buttons and buttonholes

Production Control:

Verify button sizes meet specifications
Ensure consistency of button sizes within the same batch
Calculate buttonhole opening sizes (usually 1-2mm larger than buttons)
